What Does It Mean To Be Strong?

When we hear the word strong, we might first think of physical ability or mental grit. Strength can mean lifting heavy things or pushing through long days. Merriam-Webster defines it as the “capacity for exertion or endurance,” the “power to resist force,” or “solidity or toughness.” But in the Bible, strength means something more. It’s not just about physical power—it’s also about courage, character, and faith. It’s about having God-confidence rather than relying on self-confidence. In times of emotional or spiritual fatigue, turning to Bible Scriptures for Strength can offer powerful reassurance, grounding us in God’s promises and presence

Biblical strength shows up when we face trials and stay rooted in God. It’s our ability to keep going, not because we’re tough, but because we know Who is holding us up. Strength in Scripture means we act with courage and don’t give in to fear, not because we’re never afraid, but because we trust God is right there with us.

Look at how God encourages Joshua:
Joshua 1:9 AMPCBe strong, vigorous, and very courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Strength isn’t about never feeling scared—it’s about knowing you’re not alone. David reminds us of this in the Psalms:
Psalm 31:24 AMPCBe strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for and hope for and expect the Lord!

Strength comes from expecting God to show up. That expectation fuels our courage and keeps us moving forward.

Bible Scriptures for Strength 03

Where Does Our Strength Come From?

God Is Our Strength

One of the most powerful truths in the Bible is that God is our strength. He doesn’t just give us strength—He is our strength. That changes everything.

2 Samuel 22:33 NKJVGod is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect.

When God is your strength, you can face life with boldness. Even when you mess up, you don’t have to sit in shame. The joy of the Lord can restore you.

Nehemiah 8:10 AMPCDo not be grieved and depressed, for the joy of the Lord is your strength and stronghold.

God surrounds us with strength, joy, and help. We can run to Him like a fortress and lean into His protection.

Psalm 18:1-2 AMPCI love You, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress… my Shield, the Horn of my salvation, my High Tower.

Psalm 27:1 NKJVThe Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 28:7-8 AMPCThe Lord is my Strength and Shield… The Lord is their Strength, and the Stronghold of salvation to His anointed.

Psalm 46:1 AMPCGod is our Refuge and Strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 73:26 AMPCMy flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the Strength of my heart and my Portion forever.

Isaiah 12:2 AMPCThe Lord God is my strength and song; yes, He has become my salvation.

When you read these Bible Scriptures for strength, it’s easy to see—God is not a distant helper. He’s your daily strength, your steady place, your anchor.

God Gives Us Strength

Because God is our strength, He also gives us strength. He blesses us with what we need for the moment we’re in. Whether that’s peace, courage, or endurance, God supplies it.

Psalm 29:11 AMPCThe Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.

Paul prayed that we would receive strength in our inner being, and that’s what God wants for us too.

Ephesians 3:14-16 AMPCMay He grant you to be strengthened with mighty power in the inner man by the Holy Spirit.

You’ve probably heard the verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That’s more than just a slogan—it’s a promise for hard days.

Philippians 4:13 AMPCI am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency.

Feeling tired? Worn down? You’re not alone. Scripture is full of reminders that God lifts up the weary.

Isaiah 40:29-30 AMPCHe gives power to the faint… Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted.

Isaiah 41:10 AMPCFear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Bible Scriptures for Strength 02

What Do We Do When We Feel Weak?

Let’s be honest—there are moments when we feel like we can’t keep going. That’s real. But God knew we would face times like these, and He made a way for us to receive renewed strength.

Isaiah 40:31 AMPCThose who wait for the Lord… shall renew their strength; they shall mount up as eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint.

When your soul is tired, don’t push harder—press in to God. Go to Him first. Seek Him before you seek anyone else.

1 Chronicles 16:11 AMPCSeek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually!

Psalm 27:14 NKJVWait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.

Even in weakness, you can rejoice. Even when life hurts, you can praise. That’s how you tap into the strength that doesn’t run dry.

Habakkuk 3:18-19 AMPCYet I will rejoice in the Lord… The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army.

Ephesians 6:10 AMPCBe strong in the Lord… draw your strength from Him.

Is There Power in Our Weakness?

Yes—there is real, undeniable power in weakness. Not because weakness is fun, but because it creates space for God’s power to show up. The Apostle Paul got this. When he struggled, God reminded him: “My grace is sufficient for you.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 AMPCMy strength and power are made perfect in your weakness… for when I am weak, then I am truly strong.

Your weakness is not the end of the story. In fact, it may be the beginning of deeper strength. Suffering doesn’t last forever. Even when you’ve been through hard things, God will restore, strengthen, and settle you.

1 Peter 5:10 AMPCAfter you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace… will strengthen and establish you.

Whether you’re facing anxiety, exhaustion, or emotional pain, the Bible is full of hope. These Bible Scriptures for strength aren’t just words—they’re living truth. They remind us that we don’t have to do life alone. God is near. God is able. And God is strong—even when we’re not.

So when you feel weak, don’t give up. Lean into God’s promises. Let these Scriptures be your anchor and your reminder: you are stronger than you think, because the One who strengthens you is with you, always.

As the holiday season approaches, it can feel like everyone around us is full of excitement and cheer. Yet, for many, this season brings an unwelcome guest: seasonal depression, also known as the “holiday blues.” While the festive music and twinkling lights are meant to spark joy, they can sometimes amplify feelings of sadness, loneliness, or pressure. Over the years, I’ve learned that holiday stress, lack of sunlight, and constant reminders of togetherness can leave some feeling isolated or overwhelmed. But, by understanding why seasonal depression happens and having the tools to handle it, we can find light in what feels like a dark season.

Why Does Seasonal Depression Happen?

Seasonal depression, often linked to shorter days and less sunlight, affects many people during the colder months. Also called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.), it’s a form of depression that tends to surface in late fall or early winter. While less sunlight is often a key trigger, holiday expectations and social pressures can worsen feelings of sadness or isolation.

For some, like myself, the constant reminders of love and togetherness—especially in those 30-second jewelry commercials that pop up around every corner—can strengthen feelings of loneliness. But it’s not always loneliness that brings on the blues; it can be stress from family gatherings, pressure to spend, or a general sense of being overwhelmed by all that the holidays demand.

Recognizing Symptoms of Seasonal Depression

It’s important to recognize the signs so you can address seasonal depression early. Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sleep patterns, like sleeping too much or too little
  • Changes in appetite, often craving carbohydrates or “comfort” foods
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed

These feelings might be subtle, but if left unchecked, they can lead to deeper issues. Awareness is the first step in managing them.

Tips for Handling the Holidays with Hope

Even if this season brings its share of challenges, there are ways to infuse hope and joy into it. Here are some practical steps to help you navigate this time:

  1. Focus on Giving Rather Than Receiving:

Shifting your focus to helping others is a great way to lift your spirits. Volunteering at a local shelter, reaching out to those in need, or simply bringing joy to someone else can be incredibly rewarding. This mindset helped me transform my loneliness into a time of giving and reflection.

  1. Celebrate the Reason for the Season:

Rather than focusing solely on holiday traditions, embrace the spirit of gratitude. I began to find comfort by celebrating Christ and His love. Try to turn your attention to all of God’s blessings. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to assume a posture of praise and focus on problems at the same time. For access to Bible reading plans focused on themes like hope, peace, and overcoming anxiety, perfect for strengthening faith in difficult seasons, check out YouVersion’s Bible Plans. These are some that I have written that you may find useful (https://www.bible.com/organizations/e96235dd-1056-4c8b-bc7c-a9557b20241b).

  1. Lean on Scriptures for Strength:

God’s Word can provide comfort and reassurance. Some scriptures to meditate on are:

  • The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
  • “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
  • “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Let these verses remind you of God’s constant presence and love for you, even during difficult times.

Tips Continued…

  1. Stay Active and Engaged:

Physical activity, even a simple walk outside, can make a significant difference. Spending time in nature, seeking out sunlight when possible, or even exercising indoors can boost your mood. Activities like cooking, crafting, or reading can also be comforting and allow you to focus on something enjoyable.

  1. Try Therapeutic Techniques:

Consider setting aside time for self-reflection, journaling, or deep breathing exercises. These practices can help ground you when emotions run high. Therapy can also be a valuable resource; talking to someone about your feelings and finding new coping mechanisms can be transformative. Please check out the resources that CMHI provides.

  1. Incorporate Prayer Into Your Daily Routine:

Pray for strength, joy, and peace throughout this season. Taking time to connect with God, even if just a few minutes daily, can center you and bring calm to overwhelming days.

A Simple But Powerful PrayerA Short Prayer to God - Lord, with You by my side, I can overcome anything - A Simple Prayer - YouTube

Lord, I am grateful for my life and all that You have done for me. I must admit that I am struggling, and I need Your strength. I know that You are close to the brokenhearted. I know that I can cast all of my cares on You because You care for me. Please give me rest from feeling weary and burdened. Help me see Your light shining in my days. In the Precious Name of Jesus, Amen.

The holiday blues can feel all-consuming, but with understanding, patience, and practical tools, we can manage these feelings. Whether you’re navigating loneliness, holiday stress, or simply the impact of shorter days, know that you are not alone. God is with you, and He has placed you exactly where you are meant to be, even during challenging times. Embrace the small victories each day brings, lean on the support of loved ones, and remember that brighter days are ahead.
