What an incredible, spirit-filled, and transformative day! On Saturday, May 30th, the Christian Mental Health Initiative (CMHI) hosted our 4th Annual Faith, Meds, and Therapy Virtual Mental Health Symposium. Under this year’s vital theme, “Demystifying Mental Illness: Decrease Stigma & Increase Support,” we gathered online for three powerful hours of learning, storytelling, and honest conversation.

Whether you were able to join us live or missed the event, we have great news: the complete video replay is now available directly on our YouTube channel!

A Truly Global Gathering (By the Numbers)

We are still in awe of how God expanded our borders for this event. The symposium brought together 250 total live viewers, with 220 participants joining us on Zoom and another 30 streaming live via YouTube.

Our virtual space was rich with professional and spiritual wisdom, counting at least 11 credentialed mental health providers and 6 active faith leaders chatting and collaborating alongside our attendees. Even more exciting, a staggering 90% of our tracked chat participants were first-time attendees, proving that the movement to normalize mental health conversations in the Church is growing rapidly.

The geographic data from our global church community tells a powerful story:

  • 6 Continents Represented: We had participants log in from North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia/Oceania—uniting all corners of the globe under one mission.

  • Over 20 Countries: We welcomed vibrant international clusters from across the globe, including the Philippines (representing Manila, Davao City, and Cebu City), Canada (with a strong contingent from Ontario, including Toronto and Mississauga), Nigeria (joining from Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt), the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean (including Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago). We even had an attendee join from Vatican City!

  • Over a Dozen U.S. States: We saw a diverse national turnout across the United States, spanning Pennsylvania, California, New York, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, and beyond.

Symposium Key Moments & Panel Highlights

1. The Keynote: Distinguishing Distress, Diagnosis, and Spirituality

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Noemi Bermudez (a child and adolescent psychiatrist from South Florida), kicked off the morning by brilliantly breaking down the language of mental health. She addressed the critical differences between emotional distress, normal spiritual struggles, and clinical mental illness. By explaining common everyday conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and grief in clear, non-technical language, she demystified severe conditions and took the fear out of the conversation.

Key Takeaway: Seeking professional medical or therapeutic help is not a sign of weak faith; it is a wise stewardship of the mind God gave you.

2. Expert & Faith Leader Panel: Practical Church Support

Moderated by medical student and CMHI volunteer Chioma Uka, our expert panel tackled the heavy question: What can the Church actually do?

  • The panelists provided concrete, actionable tools for churches to create safe spaces, navigate the early signs of depression, and support individuals who may be waiting for professional care to become accessible.

3. Lived Experience Panel: “This Is What It Really Feels Like”

We closed the day with our deeply moving Lived Experience Panel, featuring Tobi Mustafa, Ivan Omagor, and Angela Brown. These individuals courageously opened up about their personal journeys with mental health diagnoses. They shared what symptoms actually felt like, what actions from the church helped versus what harmed, and the profound role faith played in their ongoing recovery. Their vulnerability humanized these conditions and left everyone with a deeper sense of empathy and compassion.

Moving Forward Together

A special, heartfelt thank you goes out to CMHI’s Program Development Fellow and medical student Chidera Agugua for her incredible dedication and hard work behind the scenes in bringing this entire symposium together!

Thank you as well to our phenomenal speakers, our dedicated volunteers, and every single person who logged on from around the world to break the silence. Let us continue to build churches that are safe havens for both spiritual growth and mental wellness.

For individuals experiencing a severe mental health crisis, the emergency department (ED) is often the first point of contact for mental health care. Emergency departments in hospitals throughout Philadelphia offer essential psychiatric services for individuals who are experiencing life-threatening situations, such as suicidal thoughts, severe anxiety or depression, or psychosis. While not always a permanent solution, emergency rooms can stabilize patients and provide them with immediate interventions before referring them to appropriate care, such as inpatient or outpatient services.

When a crisis strikes, emergency rooms offer a safe, supportive environment for individuals to receive urgent care. Philadelphia has numerous hospitals equipped to handle mental health emergencies, providing a range of services from psychiatric evaluations to immediate therapeutic interventions. While most emergency rooms are not specifically faith-based, the care they offer can serve as a bridge to further support from Christian mental health providers and counselors.

This blog post highlights some of the emergency departments in Philadelphia that offer psychiatric care for individuals in crisis.

Mental health crises can arise suddenly and require immediate intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of the individual in need. Crisis Response Centers (CRCs) are specialized facilities that provide rapid assessment, stabilization, and treatment for people experiencing acute mental health crises. These centers operate 24/7 and serve as a critical resource for those in need of urgent care, especially when hospitalization isn’t immediately necessary, but a safe and supportive environment is essential.

Philadelphia is home to several CRCs that offer this vital service, helping individuals manage their crises in a compassionate and professional setting. These centers are equipped to provide mental health evaluations, medication management, and immediate therapeutic support. Whether someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts, severe anxiety, or psychosis, CRCs can offer the care and stabilization needed to navigate these challenging moments.

While CRCs in Philadelphia are not Christian-based, they provide a crucial lifeline for those in crisis. Many individuals who rely on their faith to cope can benefit from these services while seeking further faith-based support through outpatient services or spiritual communities.

Mental health care rooted in faith offers a unique blend of clinical expertise and spiritual guidance, providing individuals with a holistic approach to emotional and psychological well-being. For many, integrating Christian principles into their mental health treatment can be a source of comfort and strength, especially when dealing with anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges. Philadelphia is home to several Christian psychiatrists and psychologists – outpatient mental health providers who offer spirituality-integrated mental health care.

Outpatient services, or OP, are beneficial for individuals who do not require hospitalization but still need regular mental health support. These services allow for ongoing treatment and therapy without the need to be in a facility full-time. Whether you are seeking weekly counseling sessions, family therapy, or spiritual guidance integrated into mental health care, outpatient services provide the flexibility to live at home while receiving treatment.

In this post, we will explore some Christian-based outpatient mental health services in the Greater Philadelphia area. These Christian psychiatrists and psychologists understand the importance of faith in the healing process and are committed to helping individuals find peace and strength through both professional and spiritual support. Of note, CMHI does not officially endorse any particular practice listed below. Rather, this blogpost is to serve as a guide in helping you to find a provider who suits your needs.

We are thrilled to share a heartfelt blog post by community member Lisa Choudhrie, reflecting on the comforting presence of Immanuel—God with us. In both our moments of joy and our seasons of struggle, Immanuel is present, deeply caring about our feelings and experiences. Lisa draws from scripture to remind us that God doesn’t just see our circumstances; He feels with us, walking beside us through every high and low.

Whether we’re celebrating victories or wrestling with anxiety, God’s love is constant, and His compassion for us is unwavering. Lisa’s post reminds us that Immanuel is not distant or uninvolved, but a God who intimately knows and cares for our emotional and spiritual well-being.

Immanuel                  5.12.21

Immanuel

God with us

YHWH Creator

World- former

Galaxy -spinner

Is here with us

Not for a day

Here to stay..

Not just for the good times..

But even in our sorrows

Grief and pain

He is here in the midst

Of our humanity, our grime..

Not a time for tears

This is a time for rejoicing

But He is Immanuel..

So we needn’t pretty up

Put the make-up on

Our God is with us

Very present, very perfect..

He sees our hearts

He understands

He was here, remember

He donned human skin.

Grief, loss, pain

Through it all

He gives us the space

To let naked emotions be displayed..

Immanuel, He stands at the door

And waits till we open

And greets us

Not with a jolly ‘ ho ho’

But a love that understands

He is Immanuel

Shows us His hands

Pierced by cruel nails

Our names on His palms

Enfolds us in His loving arms..

Immanuel… God with us…

We are excited to share another powerful poem by community member Lisa Choudhrie, offering a Christian perspective on anxiety struggles. Through her heartfelt words, Lisa reflects on the peace and assurance that can be found in trusting God during moments of fear and uncertainty. Her poetry beautifully illustrates how faith can be a foundation of strength when anxiety overwhelms.

This poem reminds us to seek refuge in God’s promises and lean on Him for support in times of mental and emotional turmoil.

The dark side of the moon 29.10.2022

This poem is for me

The Lisa only I know

She’s scared, anxious

She’s always alone…

She’s got it made she thinks

Sarees draped perfectly

A dash of lipstick and her flawless skin

And she’s off to make history.

The truth is, she’s unsure

Basically of who she is

And she gets rattled easily

Weekends, holidays, family, friends…

So she works hard to forget

She cooks and goes the extra mile

She loves with her heart, oh she means it

Just that she’s empty behind the smile..

She’s trying so hard, it’s funny

And she doesn’t know how to laugh

And she falls for my lies and webs

She’s crazy, without a doubt and a half.

It’s Saturday and she’s getting ready

For the ‘weekenditis’ to hit her

She’ll go through the motions alright

Her soul will be shredded with fear…

And she plays the comparison game

All the time And all these years

She never matches up

So there’s some more tears..

Now it’s getting November

Christmas at hand

So much to do, and do well

Anxiety is her foundation, her sinking sand

And the get togethers  And the parties

Oh man, she’s coming undone

Get a migraine, get crazy

Her spirit is getting sunk…

When will this end?

Will this be the story of my life?

When will there be peace?

In the graveyard, without the light?

But today, it’s Saturday

And I’m not taking any more

These lies from the pit of hell

I’m kicking them out of the door.

So go to hell, anxiety

Take your pal comparison too,

My worth is in being a child of God

My uniqueness is so true.

I take my stand on His presence

His blood shield over me

He is my Rock, my High Tower

He has won the victory.

His love drives out fear

I’m going to breathe this in

His love drives out fear

I stand strong in Him.

My Great Amazing Deliverer

Pooh pooh GAD

He brings life, light and joy

Peace of mind, serenity.

There’s consolation in Him alone

When the waves of anxiety rise

He sets me safe on the Rock

Out of the flood and the fires..

I breathe deep and slow

Turn my neck, count to ten

Hear His words as I yawn

My Spirit finds rest and refreshment.

I am His Child, no one else like me

Every bit inside and out

Is a reflection of His heart

Quashing all my doubts..

I’m loved by Him, eternally

And my family is my treasure

And I’m going to love them

And live in the moment forever.

Moment by moment His love

Will take me places beyond my dreams

I will maximize my potential

I’m here to make history in these scenes..

And this is going to be my story

This is going to be my song

Jesus is my Redeemer

There’s peace and life, life long.

So if you are reading this

And it resonates with you

I stand with you -no judgment

Pass it on, in Jesus is life and truth.

Get it out of your system

There are loving shrinks

There’s medicine and treatment

Don’t wait till the light dims..

Life is for celebrating

His joy gives us the strength

God our Father protects us

World Mental Health Awareness Day, observed on October 10th each year, is a momentous occasion to shed light on a subject of paramount importance: the intersection of faith and mental health. At the Christian Mental Health Initiative (CMHI), we recognize the significance of holistic well-being, where spiritual beliefs intertwine with mental health. In celebration of this day, we are excited to invite you to a special virtual event that promises to shed light on a topic of great significance: “How to Find a Christian Psychiatrist or Psychologist.”

Event Details:

The Power of Faith and Mental Health

Mental health matters more than ever in today’s world. It’s not a challenge we face alone; it’s one that affects us all. And for those who find solace, strength, and healing in their faith, the connection between spiritual beliefs and mental well-being is undeniable.

World Mental Health Awareness Day provides a unique opportunity to explore the ways in which faith and mental health intersect, offering hope, support, and a path toward healing. It’s a day to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, and it’s perfectly okay to reach out to professionals who understand the importance of your beliefs.

  • Interactive Q&A: Get your questions and gain insights into the intersection of faith and mental health.

This event is part of our ongoing commitment to provide resources and support to individuals seeking mental health care that aligns with their Christian beliefs.

Spread the Word

We encourage you to share this invitation with friends, family, and your community. Together, we can create awareness about the significance of faith-based mental health care and help those in need find the support they deserve.

As we approach World Mental Health Day, let’s come together to learn, support one another, and take steps toward improved mental well-being.

Finding Your Compassionate Care Provider

The journey towards finding a Christian psychiatrist or psychologist starts with a few essential steps:

  1. Research and Referrals: Begin by researching professionals who specialize in faith-based mental health care. Seek referrals from your church community, friends, or family who may have had positive experiences.
  2. Check Credentials: Ensure that the mental health professional you consider is licensed, experienced, and has a solid understanding of Christian principles.
  3. Initial Consultation: Schedule an initial consultation to discuss your needs and gauge if there’s a good fit between you and the provider. It’s essential to have open and honest communication.
  4. Discuss Your Faith: During your consultation, discuss your faith and how it integrates with your mental health journey. A good provider will respect your beliefs and incorporate them into your care plan.
  5. Continued Support: Once you find a provider who aligns with your faith and needs, commit to ongoing therapy or treatment. Consistency is key to achieving lasting mental wellness.

Dr. Atasha Jordan will walk you through these steps in more detail during the virtual World Mental Health Awareness Day event.

CMHI’s Commitment

At CMHI, we are committed to promoting mental health awareness within the Christian community. We understand the challenges and questions that often arise when seeking mental health care that respects one’s faith. That’s why we’re here to provide guidance, resources, and support on this journey.

This World Mental Health Awareness Day, we encourage you to take a step towards holistic well-being. Seek out the compassionate care you deserve, one that respects your faith and values. May is Mental Health Awareness Month!!! As part of the efforts to raise awareness about mental health issues, the Christian Mental Health Initiative (CMHI) will host the Faith, Meds, and Therapy: Virtual Mental Health Symposium will take place on Saturday, May 13th at 10 AM EST. This event is aimed at helping Christians understand the importance of mental health, how it relates to spiritual health, and how to recognize and deal with mental illness and addiction.

The symposium is free, and anyone interested can register on Eventbrite. The event will be led by experts in the field of mental health and will feature discussions, panels, and Q&A sessions.

Why Should Christians Learn About Mental Health?

The symposium will kick off with a discussion on why Christians should learn about mental health. This topic is important because many Christians may not see the connection between their faith and mental health, and as a result, they may not prioritize their mental well-being. Learning about mental health will help Christians understand that taking care of their mental health is not only important for their overall well-being but is also an act of faith.

How Are Spiritual Health and Mental Health Related?

The connection between spiritual health and mental health will also be discussed at the symposium. Many Christians believe that their spiritual health is the most important aspect of their lives, but they may not realize that their mental health is just as important. Understanding how the two are related will help Christians prioritize their mental health and seek the help they need.

How to Recognize Signs and Symptoms of Mental Illness

The symposium will also include a session on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness. This topic is crucial because many people may not realize that they are experiencing mental health issues, and as a result, they may not seek help. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness will help Christians and others understand when they need to seek professional help.

How to Approach Addiction from a Christian Perspective

Addiction is a mental health issue that affects many people, and the symposium will also feature a discussion on how to approach addiction from a Christian perspective. Addiction can be a complex issue, and many people may struggle with understanding how their faith can help them overcome their addiction. This session will help Christians understand how they can approach addiction from a biblical perspective and seek the help they need to overcome it.

Challenges and Success Church Leaders Face Related to Mental Health in the Church

The symposium will additionally include a panel discussion about the challenges and successes that church leaders face related to mental health in the church. This topic is important because church leaders play a crucial role in helping their congregations understand the importance of mental health and seek help when needed. The panel discussion will provide insights and practical tips for church leaders to help them better support their congregations in this area.

In conclusion, the Faith, Meds, and Therapy: Virtual Mental Health Symposium is an excellent opportunity for Christians to learn about the importance of mental health during Mental Health Awareness Month. Attendees will also learn how mental health relates to their faith and how to recognize and deal with mental illness and addiction.

The symposium is free, and anyone interested can register on Eventbrite. The event will be led by experts in the field of mental health, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in discussions. By attending this symposium, Christians can take an important step toward prioritizing their mental health and supporting others in their communities who may be struggling with mental health issues.

International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate women and recognize their contributions to society. As Christian women, we often find ourselves juggling multiple roles, including motherhood, employment, being a wife, daughter, friend, and more. While we strive to excel in each of these areas, it’s important to prioritize our mental health. In this blog post, we’ll explore some practical ways Christian women can prioritize their mental health and find encouragement from the Bible.

1. Make Time for Yourself

As women, we often put others’ needs before our own. However, it’s important to carve out time for yourself to rest and recharge. This may mean waking up a little earlier to have quiet time, taking a relaxing bath, or engaging in a hobby that brings you joy. In Mark 6:31, Jesus reminds us to “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” When we prioritize rest, we can better serve others.

2. Seek Support

It’s important to have a support system to lean on during challenging times. This may include family, friends, a therapist, or a support group. In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, it says, “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.” When we have support, we can face challenges with strength and resilience.

3. Practice Self-Care

Self-care involves taking care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. This may include exercising, eating well, getting enough sleep, practicing gratitude, and praying and meditating. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, it says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” When we care for ourselves, we honor God and are better equipped to serve others.

4. Set Realistic Expectations

Christian women often feel pressure to be perfect in all areas of our lives. However, setting realistic expectations and giving ourselves grace when we fall short is important. In Proverbs 16:9, it says, “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” When we surrender our plans to God and trust in His timing and plan for our lives, we can let go of the pressure to be perfect.

5. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude involves focusing on the blessings in our lives and expressing thanks for them. This may include keeping a gratitude journal, expressing gratitude to others, or simply reflecting on the good things in your life. Philippians 4:6-7, it says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” When we focus on gratitude, we can experience peace and joy, even in difficult circumstances.

Conclusion

Remember: our worth and value come from God, not our accomplishments or roles. In 1 Peter 3:3-4, it says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” When prioritizing our mental health, we honor God and recognize that our true worth comes from Him.

Additionally, it’s important to remember that seeking professional help is not a sign of weakness. If you are struggling with your mental health, consider contacting a licensed therapist or counselor. They can provide tools and support to help you manage your mental health and improve your overall well-being.

In conclusion, as Christian women, it’s important to prioritize our mental health as we navigate the various roles and responsibilities in our lives. We can find balance and joy in our lives by making time for ourselves, seeking support, practicing self-care, setting realistic expectations, and practicing gratitude. As it says in Psalm 28:7, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song, I praise him.” When we trust in the Lord and prioritize our mental health, we can experience the strength and joy that comes from Him. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us remember to prioritize our mental health and trust in the Lord, who is our strength and shield.
